Issues Conference
Two Daviess County teens, Taylor Dewig (left) and Fiona Rykwalder (right), attended the 4-H Issues Conference at Paradise Valley Camp in Burkesville, KY November 20-22. The teens worked with an action group of their choice to define a problem, come up with their solution to the problem, then developed an action plan and budget. Group presentations were made before the entire group and a panel of judges, who critiqued the plans and then granted awards from a fictional budget. They also learned more about county government, public speaking, and the process for planning and implementing community projects.
Jacket & Vest Award
The Daviess County 4-H Vest and Jacket Awards are intended to recognize outstanding youth based upon their overall 4-H participation and achievements. Senior winner (age 14 - 19 as of 1/1/26) will be awarded an embroidered jacket. Junior winner (age 9-13 as of 1/1/26) will be awarded an embroidered fleece vest. You may win only one time as a junior and one time as a senior. To apply, fill out the 4-H Achievement Application which is available on our 4-H website. The application is due to the Extension Office by January 9. If you already turned in your achievement application, simply call to let us know you would like to put your name in to be considered for the jacket or vest award.
Scholarship Information
The Daviess County 4-H Council sponsors up to $1500 in scholarships for 4-H’ers who are graduating high school this spring and will be entering college or technical school next fall or who are already in college but have not received a 4-H scholarship in the past. The amount awarded varies upon the number of qualified applicants, but the most one applicant can receive is $1000. The application for the Daviess County 4-H Council Scholarship will require the 4-H Achievement Application. Read below for more information. The 4-H Scholarship Application is due January 9, 2026. Do not wait until the last minute, this will take some time!! The 4-H Achievement Program is intended to recognize 4-H participants who have outstanding accomplishments and to provide incentive for youth to increase their knowledge, skills, and abilities. It is a comprehensive program spanning the entire career of the 4-H’er and encourages growth and development. As youth work their way through the achievement levels, they become eligible for scholarships to teen summit, teen conference, and eventually college scholarships. The application can be found on the Daviess County 4-H website at https://daviess.mgcafe.uky.edu/4h-scholarship
Lasagna Soup
Ingredients:
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce
- 1 box (32 ounces) low-sodium chicken, vegetable, or beef broth
- 12 ounces water (fill half of the marinara jar)
- 6 sheets lasagna noodles, broken into bite-size pieces (NOT oven-ready noodles)
- 1 container (10 ounces) frozen, chopped spinach
Directions:
1. Wash hands with soap and warm water, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds.
2. Heat a large pot over medium high heat. Add beef to pot and break into fine crumbles. Season with salt and pepper. Cook beef until it’s no longer pink and it reaches 160 degrees F using a food thermometer. Drain any fat.
3. Add marinara sauce, broth, and water to the pot with beef. Increase heat to high, place lid on the pot and bring to a boil, about 6 minutes.
4. Once boiling, add lasagna noodles and lower heat to medium-high. Stir occasionally so noodles do not stick to the bottom of the pot. Cook uncovered for about 6 minutes, or until noodles are close to being done.
5. Add frozen spinach. Cook until noodles have a bit of firmness left and until spinach is heated through, about 2 to 3 minutes.
6. Ladle into bowls and add desired toppings.
7. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.
NOTES: Any short-shaped pasta will work for this soup. Optional toppings: a scoop of ricotta or cottage cheese, a sprinkle of parmesan or mozzarella cheese
